The distribution of alternating electrical current in which voltages vary in their supply capabilities is the definition of single phase power. Single phase power consists of three wires which are live, neutral and ground and the main breaker is a pole breaker. The circuit is alternating but only uses one since wave current flow.  This is where it differs from three phase power as it consists of three sine wave current flows.
